Prof. Yuan Yaxiang Elected ICIAM President
The International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM) Board Meeting was held in in Valencia, Spain, on May 20 local time. Xiangtan University alumnus Yuan Yaxiang was elected as the president (President-Elect, 2017-2019; President, 2019-2023). Yuan is also an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and a research fellow at the CAS Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science.
Yuan is the first Chinese scientist holding the post in ICIAM, which indicates China’s rising strength and influence in applied mathematics.
Founded in 1987, the ICIAM is a worldwide organization for professional applied mathematics societies, and for other societies with a significant interest in industrial or applied mathematics. It works to advance the applications of mathematics in all parts of the world. Currently the membership consists of 21 full members and 27 associated ones.
Prof. Yuan Yaxiang, born in Zixing City, Hunan, received his master degree from the CAS, and PhD from the University of Cambridge in 1986. He won the second prize of the National Natural Science Award, the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Prize in Mathematics, and the 1st Feng Kang Prize in Scientific Computing. He was elected member of the US Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and CAS academician, in 2011; member of American Mathematical Society in 2012; corresponding member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences in 2014; chairman of the Chinese Mathematical Society, and TWAS academician, in 2015; and, vice president of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) in 2016.
