XTU Delegation Visits Cooperative Universities in Spain and France
CPC Xiangtan University Committee Deputy Secretary Gao Xieping led a four-member delegation to visit such cooperative universities as the University of Leon in Spain and the University of Tours in France between May 8 and 15. The delegation consisted of head from the International Exchange School, and professors from the School of Mechanical Engineering and the College of Literature and Journalism.
During the visit to the University of Leon, XTU delegation along with delegations from other countries participated in the university’s Third International Week International Exchange Promotional Fair. They met with President of the University of Leon Juan Francisco García Marín and Vice President of the International Exchange Office Robert, and attended the Confucius Institute Council at the University of Leon. The delegation and the foreign directors were debriefed on the 2017 annual work report of the Confucius Institute at the University of Leon made by the Chinese and foreign deans. Thanks to sincere cooperation between the Chinese and foreign deans, various teaching bases have been established in the northwestern region of Spain over the past year, thus boosting the institute’s influence. The leaders of both universities highly hailed the achievements made by the Confucius Institute in 2017. Later, Gao Xieping and Robert, on behalf of the two universities, signed an implementation agreement to jointly establish the Confucius Institute. They unveiled the new Confucius Institute Building together, and inspected the Confucius Institute Library and other teaching facilities. The delegation also met with the XTU students who studied at the University of Leon to pursue a cooperative mechanical 2+2 program. The delegates learned about their study and life here. The specific teaching of the cooperation mechanical project was also discussed.
In addition, the delegation visited a number of laboratories of the Ponferrada campus of the University of Leon, and discussed possible cooperation between XTU and the campus with the person in charge. Headed by Vice Chancellor of the University of Leon Perez, the delegation also paid an official visit to Ms. Merayo, the district chief executive, focusing on the opening of Confucius classrooms. Ms. Merayo expressed her vigorous support for the move and hoped that the University would cooperate with the Xiangtan Municipal People’s Government to promote international cooperation and tourism resources development in the region.
During the visit to the University of Tours in France, the delegation met with Vice President in charge of international exchange DeSmet, and exchange students from XTU. Gao Xieping introduced XTU discipline distribution and international exchange while Desmet highlighted the university geographical advantages. After reviewing and analyzing the history and the current situation of the mutual cooperation and exchanges, the two sides had an in-depth discussion about the possibility of exchanges and cooperation between undergraduates, postgraduates and teachers and reached a consensus. They both are willing to promote in-depth cooperation and exchanges.
XTU officially cooperated with the University of Leon in 2004, and co-established a Confucius Institute in 2011. In 2013, the Mechanical Design Manufacturing and Automation major was approved by the Ministry of Education as a cooperative undergraduate educational program. Over the past 14 years, XTU has sent more than 300 students to the University of Leon, and has received nearly 80 counterpart students for short or long-term programs. XTU started cooperation with the University of Tours in 2014. At present, 31 students have been dispatched to the university.
At the invitation of the Confucius Institute Foundation in Barcelona (FICB), the delegation also paid a visit to Professor Chang Shiru, director of FICB. They exchanged views on teaching management and teaching standardized building of the Confucius institutes in Spain, as well as the development of Confucius institutes. Meanwhile, the delegation was entrusted by the Foreign Affairs (Overseas Chinese Affairs) Office of Hunan Provincial People’s Government to visit Le Musée de l’Institut Franco-Chinois in Mondial, France, to learn about the political and historical origins of Hunan Province and Mundarji, and to discuss the future cooperation between XTU and the region.
